TCC Meeting #22 of 2025

Last Thursday, on September 25, The Corridor Counts, Inc., met to speak on various issues impacting the Corridor, including immigration, housing, and local politics. TCC discussed the passing of Santos Edilberto Banegas Reyes, a 42-year-old Honduran immigrant and father of two, who was detained by ICE on September 17 and died less than 18 hours later at the Nassau County Jail. Nassau County claims that Mr. Banegas Reyes died from liver failure, but his family and medical professionals doubt this claim, as he showed no signs of liver failure before being detained. TCC has decided to move forward with a letter to all of the politicians in the Corridor demanding that they go to the Nassau County Jail and investigate the conditions of the 50 cells where other ICE detainees are held, inquire about what really happened to Mr. Banegas Reyes, ask about camera usage at the jail, and report back to TCC on their findings.

In addition, the group spoke about 100 Terrace Avenue Apartments and the lawsuit that the building president, Tina Schuferd, is pursuing because, despite the landlord allegedly having $40 million for maintenance, there are rampant issues relating to mold, mildew, and needles being strewn around the building. TCC plans to spread awareness about the issue and potentially hold a press conference to bring light to the situation.

Lastly, the group spoke about who they plan to endorse in the 2025 local election. For Nassau County Legislature, TCC aims to back Scott Davis in District 1, Viviana Russell in District 2, Carrie Solages in District 3, James Hodge in District 4, Olena Nicks in District 5, and Debra Mule in District 6. For the Town of Hempstead Legislature, we aim to back Dorothy Goosby in District 1 and Darien Ward in District 4. For the Town of North Hempstead Legislature, we aim to back Robert Troiano, Jr. in District 1. TCC plans to create and mail out a voter’s guide in the coming days.

TCC meets every Thursday at 6:30 pm at 556 Peninsula Blvd. Hempstead, NY 11550. Please join us in this important work - all are welcome!
